What are concrete additives and why are they needed

As you know, any concrete mix is ​​mixed with water. In this case, the minerals that are part of the cement begin to react with it: hydration occurs with the destruction of water molecules, the formation of crystalline hydrates and, ultimately, the formation of a solid cement stone. Each mineral begins to react with water at different times and behaves differently at different stages of hardening. In addition, temperature and humidity affect the reaction rate.

Additives that modify and improve the properties of concrete are used in construction work of a very different scale: from the erection of gigantic structures according to the principle of monolithic concreting to the arrangement of paths at a summer cottage. Despite the fact that a large number of ready-made dry building mixtures, stearic acid Malaysia and mortars are now being produced, in private construction, preference is given to the independent preparation of concrete based on a cement-sand mixture. Additives are selected at their own discretion, taking into account specific conditions. Concrete mixtures with additives are used in a variety of cases.

In order to regulate the hydration process, improve the technical characteristics of concrete mixtures and provide optimal conditions for setting, hardening, maturing to a state of critical strength and further curing, many types of different modifier additives are used. 

They are able to change the structure of the mixture and can act in different ways:

  • Prevent the formation of cracks and delamination;
  • Reduce the freezing point;
  • Enhance adhesion;
  • Increase fluidity;
  • Reduce consumption, etc.

Chemical additives to concrete can be produced dry, liquid and in the form of a liquid concentrate. There are many types of modifiers. Most often, the following are needed:

Stabilizing additives

Needed for a self-leveling mortar. Provides optimum viscosity. With the introduction of these additives, the cement particles are enveloped with a microgel, as a result of which a framework is formed that prevents concrete delamination. At the same time, the filler particles move freely, which maintains workability. With these additives, a self-leveling and, at the same time, self-compacting concrete mixture is obtained, which can be used to fill structures oversaturated with reinforcement and the most complex configuration.
